The Building Bridges for Business “U can B – Coffee With” series is an extremely beneficial program for young adults looking forward to the big decisions of their future.
What the Students are Saying

The Building Bridges website provides interviews with business owners from around Pittsburgh who share their stories, and are honest about what works and what does not in the field of business. It is extremely easy to find a video of a particular interest and subject matter. A high school student at Keystone Oaks, I participated in the “Coffee With” series where the small business entrepreneurs came to our school and talked to a small group of students about the decisions they had made.

I feel the biggest lesson I learned through the coffee with series is to follow your passion. These entrepreneurs and city council members have taken risks and many turns from the path they had originally set out on. It was interesting to hear these adults talking about decisions we will soon have to make, and learn that is alright to change your path as long as you end up working towards your passion.

The “coffee with” series introduced my classmates and I to people like Dan Gilman and Corey O’Connor, working for the city, making local changes that affect day to day life. My classmates looking to go into law and related fields felt these lectures were extremely eye opening for them.

Also, my classmates looking more towards business and science found speakers like Mary Beth Wilson to be inspiring. Many high school students go to college in a field they have not experienced or job shadowed anyone. The “coffee with” series allows the students to ask these business professionals questions about their fields and paths and have a better idea of the decisions facing them. It also provides contacts for the students,

I personally have been in contact with one of the speakers and she has been extremely influential.

One of the teachers taught me things that I didn’t know and I thought that was cool.  He taught me what was real and what I should look for in opportunities. 8th grade student Clairton High School May 2015

He really helped me a lot.  I am so grateful for The U can B program. He provided me with a better experience of jobs in entrepreneurship and health careers. They said in entrepreneurship to have a plan, fundraise, and try your best to make it happen. Never give up. ………J.H. May 2015 Clairton High School

One of the things that I learned from U can B is that there are many other choices out there for me besides going to a 4 year college.

2 speakers came from Rosedale Technical College and they taught us about careers in the Trade Schools. I didn’t know that you can get a trade degree in 24 months. One of the programs was automotive and that interested me. I know that I want to go into an automotive career now.

I heard that there are all kinds of careers and options for me. The speakers were very helpful because it wasn’t just about one thing; it was about all different kinds of careers. Now I know that I can be something great!!

My experience with the U can B program was a positive one. They effectively educated me on careers in entrepreneurship, health care and trades. They informed me about different jobs. …………A.C. May 2015 Clairton High School

In the U can B program I learned some really important info that affects my future. ………B.J. May 2015 Clairton High School.

I believe that the speakers were helpful and well spoken. The topic of health care careers was most helpful to me. I want to be a paramedic. I believe that I have more understanding of my career plans. They did address me and answered my questions and that was appreciated. I also liked how they saw the potential in each and every one of us. They actually believe in people like us. They came to encourage us. We need more speakers like these. …………M.B. May 2015 Clairton High School

My experience with the U can B program was helpful and very beneficial. The powerpoints were a good use of the material covered in the program. Having different speakers come in and talk about all of the different careers benefitted me because I was able to see the different perspectives. It also allowed me to expand my knowledge on jobs in entrepreneurship, trades, and health careers. The speakers that came in did a very thorough job of explaining their careers and the difficulties and benefits of the careers that that chose. ………….A.C. May 2015 Clairton High school

The U can B program was very informative. When speaking about health care and trade careers they explained career options and were very descriptive of the work that goes on in these fields. The information on the health care careers was beneficial to me. I am now considering entering the medical field. Also the information was easy to understand. They connected with us personally making the information stick. ……………A.S. May 2015 Clairton High School
The U can B program was very insightful. The entrepreneurship part did not catch my attention very well. The trades and health care part did. The people talking about trades gave me lots of knowledge on all the possible careers that I could accomplish through a trade school. Also the woman from Jefferson Hospital listed out all the jobs and careers you could do while you were in High School and even gave me a card with her name on it. ……………P.R.
